Translating with Google

Did you know you can use Google to translate text from one language to another? It's easy to use, and accessing it is not too different from a regular Google search. Whether you're in a foreign country and need help translating something or you're reading a book with some foreign language in it, you can use Google to help you translate almost anything.

Using the translator

  1. Go to google.com, type translate in the Google search bar, then click Google Search.

  2. In the box on the left labeled Enter text, type the word, phrase, or sentence you would like to translate. Google will automatically detect the language and display the translation in the box on the right.

  3. You can also change the language Google is translating to or from by clicking the language in the top-left of either box and selecting a different language from the drop-down menu. For example, if you wanted to translate something from English to French, you would type the English phrase in the box on the left, then change the language on the right to French.

Using the audio feature

You may want to know how to correctly pronounce the content you are translating into another language. Google has an easy-to-use audio playback feature that will pronounce whatever you type. Simply click the Listen button, which is shaped like a speaker, in the bottom-left corner of either box.

Using the Swap languages feature

Click the Swap languages button in the top-right of the first box. This will change the places of the two texts. You can then edit the text in the first box to translate it into the selected language of the second box.

Translating websites

If you come across a website that's entirely in another language, it would take a long time to translate every sentence or word using the translator. Luckily, the complete Google Translate feature contains the ability to translate entire websites.

  1. Go to translate.google.com.
  2. Type or paste the website's URL into the box on the left. A link will appear in the box on the right.
